Trade Mechanism Selection in Markets with Frictions

چکیده
We endogenize the trade mechanism in a search economy with many homogenous sellers and many heterogenous buyers of unobservable type. We study how heterogeneity and the traders continuation valueswhich are endogenousinßuence the sellers choice of trade mechanism. Sellers trade off the probability of an immediate sale against the surplus expected from it, choosing whether to trade with everyone and how quickly. In equilibrium sellers may simply target one buyer type via non-negotiable offers (price posting), or may price discriminate (haggling). We also study when haggling generates trading delays. A price setting externality arises because of a strategic complementarity in the sellers pricing choices.

Decentralized Trade Mitigates the Lemons Problem
In markets with adverse selection, only low-quality units trade in the competitive equilibrium when the average quality of the good held by sellers is low. We show that under decentralized trade, however, both highand low-quality units trade, although with delay. Moreover, when frictions are small, the surplus realized is greater than the (static) competitive surplus. Thus, decentralized trade ...

متن کاملLiquidity and Selection in Asset Markets with Search Frictions
I construct a model of an asset market subject to search frictions, in an environment where both asset liquidity and market composition are determined endogenously. The analysis predicts that higher asset prices resulting from exogenously higher asset earnings imply: (i) a shorter search duration for sellers (higher liquidity), (ii) a shorter owner tenure before listing assets for resale (turno...
متن کاملThe Efficiency of Centralized and Decentralized Markets for Lemons∗
In markets with adverse selection, when average quality is low and frictions are small decentralized trade produces a greater surplus than predicted by the competitive model: under decentralized trade some high-quality units of the good trade whereas, due to the lemons problem, only low-quality units trade in the competitive equilibrium. This suggests a reason why these markets are often dece...
متن کاملThe Role of Trading Frictions in Real Asset Markets
Almost all real assets trade in decentralized markets, where trading frictions could inhibit the efficiency of asset allocations and depress asset prices. In this paper, I use data on commercial aircraft markets to empirically investigate whether trading frictions vary with the size of the asset market. Intuitively, it is more difficult to sell assets that have a thin market. As a result, firms...
